Make Lasting Family Memories at Lake Chatuge

Make Lasting Family Memories at Lake Chatuge

There is no time more important than the time families spend together. Family vacations build strong bonds and create memories that last a lifetime. Nestled in the Georgia mountains, Lake Chatuge is the perfect place to relax and enjoy that precious family time. From hiking and camping, to cooler weather lake activities like fishing and canoeing, nature’s playground is just a short drive away. Our handy planning guide will help you make your visit to Lake Chatuge truly unforgettable.

Our sparkling lake is always ready for you to cast a line or for a peaceful paddle across its cool waters, even if it’s not quite warm enough to hop on a jetski or take a dip just yet. Fishing, kayaking and canoeing are wonderful springtime activities for all guests, big or small. Lake Chatuge is the perfect spot for aspiring bass fishers, with the area regularly hosting competitions to see who can catch the biggest of these prized fish. Pull up to a dock or rent a boat from one of the area’s boat rental partners so you can cruise around the lake between casts. Rental facilities also offer kayaks and canoes if a peaceful journey around the lake’s 130 miles of shoreline is more your speed.

One of our most picturesque attractions is also an ideal spot for little ones to stretch their legs and learn more about the various plant life around them. Hamilton Gardens, a 33-acre wonderland on the shore of Lake Chatuge, is home to the largest collection of rhododendrons in the southeast. More than 1,500 rhododendrons and native azaleas live within its boundaries, twisting around a beautiful walking trail that winds for a mile along the lake’s shoreline. The bloom season, known as “A Blooming Affair at Hamilton Gardens,” lasts from mid-April to mid-May, creating a colorful playground for curious little minds to explore. Lake Chatuge is also home to winding, scenic trails and crystal blue waterfalls. Our guide to the area’s best hikes is the perfect tool to route your family’s adventure.

No vacation to Lake Chatuge is complete without experiencing some of the delicious bites in the area! Get all the fun of a beachside restaurant right in the Georgia mountains by stopping by Sand Bar & Grille. This casual, open-air spot surrounded by sand has a sprawling porch for diners and plenty of beachy activities for those with a little energy left to burn. If Mexican food is more your flavor, check out the food truck at Hiawassee Brew and pair your meal with a frosty local beer or fine local wine. Kids will love sinking their teeth into tasty tacos, while parents will enjoy fantastic local spirits.

Figuring out where to stay is one of the most crucial parts of creating your family’s dream Lake Chatuge vacation. Plan a true retreat in nature for your family by staying at one of the area’s sprawling campgrounds. Make your vacation feel a little rustic while still feeling like home by renting one of many quaint cabins in the area. Or experience the ease and luxury of a top-class hotel by booking one of the family-friendly suites at Brasstown Valley Resort. There are plenty of options to rest easy and recharge after a day of play.

Lake Chatuge is the ideal place to disconnect with the bustling world of everyday life and slow down to reconnect with your family. Whether taking advantage of activities on our wonderful waterways, exploring colorful blooms at local gardens, adventuring to the nearest waterfall or letting one of our dining spots take care of dinner, there’s plenty to enjoy.
